Getting Comfortable on Your Own

There are a lot of people who are afraid to be alone. In some cases this may be because they have a phobia that leads to panic attacks when they are by themselves. In most cases however it is because they have never gotten used to being alone because they have never had to spend any time on their own. Often this creates problems when they reach adulthood and decide to get their own place.

In many cases when people first move out on their own they are very nervous about it, in some cases they are so afraid that they never actually do and will instead find excuses to live with somebody. The problem is that if you avoid facing your fear you will never get over it. The longer you wait the harder it will be to get over your fear of being alone. This is why as soon as you can afford it you should try living by yourself, even if it is just for a short period of time. There is no reason that you need to be nervous about doing so, there are lots of things that you can do to make it easier.

The first thing that you can do to make yourself more comfortable with living alone is to realize that you do not have to spend a great deal of time alone. Just because you are not living with somebody does not mean that you are really on your own. Certainly there will be times when you are the only one there but this can be limited by having an active social life. If you are feeling lonely in your new place simply make an effort to go out and see people. You can go out and meet friends or you can simply go to one of the many places where people congregate.

Another useful way to get over a fear of being alone is to get a pet. A lot of people find that this will ease the transition to living alone. A pet can be great company and it can give you the sense that you are not alone. The one thing that you do have to be careful of though is that you not come to rely on the pet for companionship. The idea is to use the pet to help you get used to being alone not as a way to make sure that you are not alone.
